INTERVIEW: NARS GLOBAL LEAD MAKEUP ARTIST

I had the pleasure of meeting the Global Lead Makeup Artist of NARS; Anastasia Ignatova. Anastasia was such a pleasure to interview, firstly she’s so beautiful and down to earth. It was nice to hear about another makeup artist’s journey and all the experience she has when it comes to NYFW etc. We talked about the new Charlotte Gainsbourg collection and so much more. I’ll leave the rest to you…

Tell us a bit more about your background My professional career has always been connected with the beauty world. I started working with different skincare brands but I was so excited about makeup from my very early days in the industry. When I saw the first NARS store open in Moscow I took the chance to start the life I always dreamed of.

Tell us more about New York Fashion Week and the backstage vibe I was part of the backstage team for shows such as Alexander Wang, Phillip Lim, Creatures Of The Wind and many others. NYFW is amazing and the vibe is so difficult to describe. Being surrounded by the best models and great artists was fantastic. The best way to describe it is ‘an artistic chaos’ yet at the same time everything is so organized and structured. Everybody involved clearly knows their job, very focused but at the same time, very inspired.

As lead stylist, tell us about what your role involves I participate backstage at LFW and NYFW as well as being involved with the PR of new products launches and shoots. A big part of my job is taking part in local and international in-store events. One of my favorite parts of the job is teaching and coaching the NARS artists.

How is NARS different to other makeup brands? NARS is audacious. Tis is the word to best describe my feeling about the brand. There are no rules. There is the soul and vision of Francois Nars who personally creates all the collections to emphasize the individuality of each person.

How did the collaboration between Charlotte Gainsbourg and NARS come about? Charlotte and Francois met at a shoot long before the collection came about. Francois was taken by Charlotte’s charisma and personality and was always fascinated with her brave and unique style which is why he decided to collaborate with her. Charlotte has personally created all shades and textures for the collection. Francois helped to bring everything to life.

What are your thoughts on product mixing? NARS gives absolute freedom for creativity. I often mix textures and shades. On the runway we often make some very unexpected combinations!

What products do you feel NARS is an industry leader in? The history of NARS began in 1994 with 12 lipsticks and I truly believe is still the leader in this category. Velvet Matte Lip Pencils are the global bestsellers.

I personally feel NARS is one of the best brands for women of color. What is your advice when picking the right foundation shade? I absolutely agree with you. The best way to choose the right shade is to apply three colors on the cheek and choose the one that you feel matches best. Consider the light and don’t base it all on the lighting in store. Always better to make a decision in front of a window.

What are your top 3 NARS products? The absolute leader for me is the Velvet Matte Skin Tint, the texture of this product provides a matte but very natural finish. Dual-Intensity blush has an unusual texture which can be applied dry or wet. Lastly, Velvet Matte Lip Pencil, so durable, matte but very soft in texture.

Any new makeup trends we should keep an eye out for? The three main trends we’re focusing on this season are glossy statement eyes, fresh flushed skin and a soft matte lip. All achievable with NARS products!
